You Don’t Leave Yourself at the Door

There’s an untruth tucked into a lot of workplace cultures.

It says when your work self clocks in for the day.

You leave your personal self at the door.

In other words, check your “baggage” at the door.

Your body, your energy, your values, your intuition, your preferences, your pace — all of that is supposed to politely wait outside while you log on, lead the team, take the call, send the proposal, and build the business.

I do not buy that for a second.

Everywhere you go, there you are.

Not part of you. ALL of you.

The version of you sitting down at the laptop is still you. The one stepping into a sales call is still you. The one leading the team, answering the email, recording the video, building the offer, walking into the room — still you.

Contrary to what some would have you believe, you do not magically become a stripped-down, hyper-efficient robot just because work started.

Why Growth Starts Feeling Heavy
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately because I see how many women entrepreneurs are still trying to split themselves in half. They are trying to grow while ignoring what their body is telling them. They are trying to build while overriding their preferences, their energy, their instincts, their schedule, their actual way of working.

Then they wonder why growth feels heavier than it should.

Well…

If your body is saying no, your chest is tight, your shoulders are up by your ears, your mind is buzzing like a little beehive, and you’re still trying to force yourself forward because “that’s what successful people do,” of course there is friction.

Misalignment creates friction.

Alignment creates ease.

Ease Is Not Laziness
Let me shout this out for the people in the back: Ease is NOT laziness.

Ease is what happens when you stop fighting yourself all day long.

Ease happens when your values, your body, your schedule, your boundaries, and your business are moving in the same direction rather than creating friction.

Learning What Actually Works

For me, a lot of this meant figuring out what genuinely works for me.

I am not a 5 a.m. workout person. I have tried. I have flirted with the fantasy. I have looked at the sunrise and thought, “Maybe this is my era.”

It is not my era.

I workout, but it’s later in the morning—early birds may get the worm, but as for me, I’ll wait for the encore.

I’ve found that my sweet spot is starting slower in the morning. I meditate. I have breakfast. I workout. I ease into the day and then bring my full energy once I’m actually online (mentally and figuratively).

That rhythm supports me. It lets me show up stronger for work.

That is the strategy that works for me.

Boundaries Are Part of Alignment

The same is true in business.

There are so many “shoulds” floating around in entrepreneurship. You should wake up earlier. You should answer everything faster. You should be available all the time. You should want to be reached at any moment by anyone with your number.

No, thank you.

Part of my own alignment has been creating boundaries that support the way I lead best.

I use a Google phone number instead of handing out my personal cell. I adhere to a schedule that works with my body.

I trust my team enough to give them the flexibility to work the hours that best support themselves. They know the deadlines. They know the work that needs done, when it needs done and when to be available for our clients. In other words–I let grown adults be grown adults.

There was fear in that at first. I started questioning myself based off of these fears—“What if I miss something because I wasn’t online soon enough?” “What if people think I’m not available enough?” “What does this say about me?”

You can let fear tell stories forever, freeze you into analysis paralysis…or you can try something and get actual information.

That’s how you find your way.

  • You try.
  • You notice.
  • You adjust.
  • You learn yourself.

And once you know yourself, you can build around what works.

That’s where confidence starts to deepen.

Not from trying to become the kind of leader who looks good on paper and feels terrible in her actual life.

Confidence grows when you know your way and trust it enough to live it.

The Wrong Client Is Not Worth It

That includes clients, too.
You know on a sales call when something is off.

I’ll even be so bold as to say most times you can tell in the first 30 seconds whether there is alignment or not.

Your body knows before your brain finishes the sentence. You bristle. You tighten. You feel yourself pulling back. And if you have the confidence to listen, you save yourself a whole lot of heartache later.

The money is not worth the heartache.

That line belongs on a mug or maybe even a billboard. It is easy to deprioritize alignment when dollar signs are being waved in front of you.
Alignment is not only a wellness concept. It’s a business concept. It affects your schedule, your team, your offers, your clients, your pace, your joy, your profit, your peace. I already know my answer is no, but ask yourself—is that sacrifice really worth the money?

I walked away from a client that was bringing us substantial revenue, simply because I could see the strain that this misaligned relationship was putting on my team. It wasn’t easy. We weren’t planning on this. At the time, we didn’t have an immediate way to fill the monetary gap from their departure. But, it was the right move. And I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

The Invitation for May

So if May is asking anything of you, maybe it’s this:

Stop trying to grow by abandoning yourself.

Start getting curious about what alignment looks like for you.

Ask yourself:

  • What works?
  • What drains me?
  • What makes my body tighten?
  • What lets my shoulders drop?
  • What helps me think clearly?
  • What support helps me do my best work?

That is what makes growth sustainable.

Confidence Practice

This week, notice one place where you’ve been acting like your work self and your actual self are two different people.

Then ask:

What would change if I let more of me come with me into this?

  • My body.
  • My values.
  • My pace.
  • My preferences.
  • My wisdom.

Pick one small adjustment that helps you work in a way that feels more like you.

⚡️Powerline

(Each month, we’ll share a Powerline: a punchy phrase to steady your energy, lock in your confidence, and help you lead online and off.)

“I do not leave myself at the door. I show up as me, and expand even more.”

At Holloway Media Services, we help CEOs and founders build brands and visibility that feel more aligned from the inside out. When your strategy fits your voice, your values, and your actual way of working, growth gets a whole lot easier to sustain.
