You can have the best email campaign in the world, the best-automated marketing system, the best product and service; of course, you do, but if your customer never opens your messages to learn how they can work with you, then you’re missing out on the chance to generate clients on demand.

You probably don’t have time to open every email in your inbox. So think about it; which ones entice you to click and read more? What kinds of subject lines do they have? Recognizing the subject lines that work for you is a great starting point for your email marketing. 

A word of caution here: Do NOT use your email subject line to promote you. Use the subject line to entice the reader to open the message and read more.

Best Practices For A Winning Subject Line

  1. Use 60 characters or less. 

This copywriting formula is proven: Convince and Convert reports that 82% of experts send emails with subject lines of this length. Many email service providers don’t show complete subject lines. There’s limited space on mobile and desktop, and attention spans are limited. Keep it short, sweet, and concise. 

  1. Be fearless and quirky. 

Humor is the key to any reader’s heart! If you can make someone laugh, then you’ll grab their attention. Humor holds attention too, while having a positive experience. When users can connect with content they find entertaining, they’re much more likely to open the email and interact further with your brand. 

  1. Maintain some sense of mystery. 

Pique the recipient’s natural curiosity. Here are a few email subject lines that got me to open:

I had to open the email to get more information. I was compelled. Subject lines that build suspense, pose a question, or tease something of interest can result in a higher open rate. However, you don’t want to overdo it—too much mystery can be frustrating and may start to feel like spam.
