how to create a video script for your next video

Have you ever had one of those moments where you’re like, “I know what I want to say but I don’t know how to say it?” Well in this post we’ll help you break down your message into a super powerful video script that will make people excited about your next message.

One thing we’re good at Holloway Media Services is writing scripts. Amy and Heather are former television commercial producers and behind any great ad, they say there’s a great script so include these must-have parts for a winning marketing video:

1. Write A Juicy Hook

How do you get a viewer interested in what you have to say? Start with a compelling opening line called a hook! An opening so exciting that it convinces a viewer that your video is worth watching.

The purpose of a hook sentence is to grab attention and give your viewer a reason to invest their time and energy into your video. Cause here’s a fun fact: human beings have an attention span that’s even shorter than a goldfish. You only have 5 seconds to grab the viewer’s attention and hold it.

Sometimes you’ll be able to sit down and in a flash of inspiration, your hook will come. But if you need some help to get started, try these techniques:

  1. Introduce a problem and promise a solution
  2. Offer a surprise
  3. Promise a story
  4. Tell your audience what you do
  5. Use text to reach your audience

2. Introduce Yourself

Next, draw your audience in even more by introducing yourself.

Did you catch our intro in this video? I anchored the value of the video content with the fact that we worked in television.

Heather also started her career in radio, but you don’t need to know that here. You’re not going to review your entire resume in your intro. Instead, simply write three or four short sentences to explain who you are and your experience behind the topic you will cover.

3. The Body

Now let’s get into the meat of the video, which is called the body.

Here you can provide a list of tips or comment about the latest update in your industry and how it will affect your audience.

Or maybe your script is to persuade your audience to shift their thinking to your way of thinking.

And don’t forget how-tos. They work well here, too. Provide your viewers with how to do something like writing a script, for instance, or maybe it’s the best way to use your skincare product.

Whatever the topic, make sure it sounds uniquely like you! It’s cool to be inspired by someone but make sure to infuse your essence in every word you write.

4. Include A Call To Action

Finally, don’t forget your call to action!

We love humans but they’re a lazy bunch. They love to take action when there is a clear direction. So don’t leave your audience in action purgatory, tell them clearly what you want them to do, and often they’ll do it!

It’s important to note that your viewers are more receptive to your CTAs if you understand what industry-specific phrases or messaging they’re used to.

For instance, if you run an e-comm business tart your CTA with words like “buy,” “shop,” or “order”.

Are you promoting a newsletter or white paper? Start your CTA with words like “download” or “subscribe”.

Do you want someone to request more information? Try “fill out a form for” or “find out how”.

WordStream has a super valuable article on 7 Tips for a Killer Call-to-Action. They go deep on other tactics that we found really helpful. It’s a quick read and well worth it!

5. Bonus tip: Give Thanks!

Don’t forget to thank your viewers! This oft-forgotten, simple, little gesture could have a huge impact on your viewer’s relationship with your brand.

But you don’t have to take our word for it. Check out this really cool quote from really smart people:

Remember, you could change the course of someone’s day by genuinely saying thanks.

The takeaway…

Video marketing is an incredibly effective way to promote your business. Consumers love it because it’s easy to digest and social media marketers love it because there’s huge potential for ROI.
