RERUN Creating a Course With Arika Clark

Pract•ad•goal is a word host Heather Holloway created. It is the sum total of the words ‘practical advancement goals.’ Her intention with this podcast is to teach entrepreneurs how to advance their careers with practical business advice.

The pandemic has moved the online course industry into overdrive. In fact, by 2026 it will be a $457 BILLION industry!

If you’re thinking, “How do I create an online course!?” You are in the right place! Arika Clark from ThriveEpic teaches us how to get started and how to avoid the three common mistakes online course creators make.

Practadgoal Talking Points

[2:44] Arika’s backstory: how she started with ThriveEpic.

  • She found herself burnt-out even though she was working for herself, and so she mentions that entrepreneurs can always look into doing something else if they find themselves unhappy with what they’re doing.
  • Arika felt the need to change / pivot, and then she decided to dive into the coaching world.
  • When Covid hit, amidst the loss of her coaching contracts, people started to come to her to consult about transitioning their programs online.

[5:13] The growth of e-learning.

  • E-learning has started to pick up, and it has now skyrocketed when Covid hit.
  • Because of the current growth of e-learning, there’s this need for business owners to put up something online in order to generate awareness and eventually attract clients.

[7:29] What are mini-courses?

  • Use them to generate awareness of what you do, how you do it (your “style”), and give the audience a preview of what you offer.
  • Use them as a “hook.”
  • Mini-courses can be free, or sold as a low ticket offer, or even as a high ticket offer. Everything depends on your business model.

[9:16] Build online content and courses with intent.

  • Anchor everything into your business model.
  • The online course will depend on your comfort level and style.
  • Being an imperfect human being on the other side of the camera is okay.

[12:34] Arika discusses three reasons to add learning opportunities to your business.

  • It frees you up in your business. So, instead of saying the same message over and over again, the recording presents the message for you on-demand.
  • Online courses give passive and active income.
  • It’s one of the ways to provide a great client experience.

[15:57] Arika discusses the importance of automation.

  • Automation can lessen your load.
  • And automation can free up time. Especially if you’re starting to run at capacity.

[17:13] How to create an online course if you’re camera-shy.

  • If you choose to work with Arika, she has a process that will make the recording not so intimidating.
  • You can hire somebody to read off your scripts.
  • Parts of your course can be audio only by compsing them with visual elements.
  • Have more confidence because people want to see you as you represent your brand.
  • Outsource your video to an editor so you don’t have to see the awkward moments that get cut.

[20:49] How online courses can help coaches or consultants who only work with companies.

  • You can bundle up the contents/ training courses that you’ve done and sell them to companies as resource libraries.
  • Use courses to down-sell your services to companies that are not financially able to pay for your full services.

[24:10] Arika and Heather discuss some important practical tips for online course creators.

  • Be yourself and don’t try to be somebody else.
  • Choose and narrow down your topic.
  • You have your own secret sauce. You have your own special something.

[29:47] What does working with Arika look like?

  • Expect a lot of one-on-one attention, full transparency and help in having the confidence to create a course that you can be proud of.
