We all have insecurities when it comes to public speaking. But how do you get past them? The key is practicing, but also knowing your audience and yourself.
With that in mind, here are 6 ways to get confident on camera.
Get Started!
Just get started!
Forget about being perfect because having a great on-camera presence takes time. If you keep thinking about starting to record videos for YouTube or social media… you’ll never hit the record button!
As long as the audience can see you and hear your voice, hit record and share your unique content with the world.
Find your Niche and Your Audience
Find your niche and address the pain points of your audience.
This idea requires research, which will give you confidence in the topics that you share. You’ll know all there is to know about the topics you want to discuss so your passion and confidence will be off the charts!
To Script (Or Not To Script)
We’re old-school radio and television commercial producers so we prefer to write scripts, but maybe you prefer to use bullet points to keep you focused. Heck! Try both and see which one provides a better experience for the viewer.
Whether you write out every word or just use bullet points, talk through your script or bullet points before you hit record. A few times. The goal here is to get super familiar with your content.
You might even find it helpful to talk directly to a friend or colleague to further refine your script or talking points.
Or, record a voice memo and listen to yourself while exercising or driving. You start to subconsciously memorize your script or talking points. Heather does this and finds it to be super helpful.
Record One Video To Review
Record one video and review it. What parts of your performance and presentation could use more work?
On-camera your energy needs to shine! You must be animated, super pumped, and passionate about the topic at hand.
If your on-camera energy isn’t top-notch, practice! Practice in front of the mirror. You’ll get there!
Side note: if you’re upset or having a bad day, let yourself off the hook. Yes, we know we need to record videos and post new content but we have to do it when we’re inspired and feeling well.
Get Pumped!
Get camera-ready! Brush your hair. Check your teeth. 🙂 AND begin a routine that gets you relaxed and excited to share your content.
Listen to music, your favorite podcast, or some comedy! Maybe a little dancing around your office or a walk around the block gets you in the right frame of mind before recording your next video.
Whatever it is it should dial in your passionate energy.
Practice!
This just in! You can record multiple takes and piece them together in editing. LOL
You don’t have to be perfect! You’ll make mistakes and learn from those mistakes to make the next video better.
Your energy on-camera will increase. Your confidence will grow and each time you practice the whole process will get easier.
The takeaway…
We know it can feel intimidating at first but we’ve shared six things you can do before filming your first video that will build your confidence level.
You can get comfortable in front of the camera with preparation and practice!
